Dutch Prevail In Neighborhood Battle

Naomi Halman poured in 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Netherlands as they beat visitors Belgium 74-69 on Wednesday.

In a Group C game of the EuroBasket Women Qualification Round, the Dutch used a strong first quarter as a platform for victory.

Meindert van Veen's team outscored the Belgians 19-7 in the opening frame, including a 10-0 run to begin the contest.

After trailing 36-22 at half-time, Belgium showed signs of life.

The visitors went on a 10-2 spurt to start the second half and reduced the arrears to 38-32 with a basket by Laurence Van Malderen.

The hosts rediscovered their offensive rhythm, however, and went back in front by 14.

In the fourth quarter, the Netherlands outscored the Belgians 23-19 and won by 15.

The Netherlands tasted victory for the first time in four games while Belgium fell to 0-4.
